Maho Bay Campground is officially closing on May 15. Maho's yoga teachers, Suki, Joel and Jessa are hosting a Celebration of Maho, with Yoga Asana, Pranayama and Satsang. $25 or sliding scale. Limited yoga mats and blankets available.

Come join in Honoring the Beauty, Celebrate the Community, finding Joy and Celebration in all the wonderful memories of Maho Bay Camps!!

Suki has been leading her Heart-Centered Yoga classes at Maho Bay Camps since 1997 and has inspired 1000's of people to begin or renew their yoga practice; giving guests at Maho their own private yoga retreat. Joel attended many of Suki's classes over his years of working at Maho before traveling to New Mexico, India and Australia; for training and teaching. He has become a strong, well- loved yoga instructor. Jessa began her yoga practice in the Womb, took classes with Suki growing up and pursued yoga in college. She trained for her RYT at the Shoshoni Ashram in Shambhava Yoga and studied Anusara in Colorado. She has  developed a beautiful teaching style.

Come join us for this Full Moon Maho Celebration. All levels welcome.

Jessa Buchalter (29) St. John, US Virgin Islands: Yoga Instructor, Full Time Mother of Two

Background:  My yoga practice began in the womb.  Born on St. John to a dedicated yoga mom, much of my early practice involved climbing trees, playing at the beach and floating in the Caribbean Sea.  Always active, I dabbled in dance, tumbling, sailing, martial arts, horseback riding and soccer.
I rediscovered my passion for yoga in college, enjoying the challenge of Ashtanga Yoga.  My quest for a teacher took me to the Shoshoni Ashram in Colorado where I completed my 200 hour teacher training in the Shambhava School of Hatha Yoga in 2007, and a Yoga for Healing training in 2011.  While teaching in Vail, Colorado, I was blessed to discover the heart centered practice of Anusara Yoga and Universal Principles of Alignment.
When I began teaching, I discovered that my best teachers were my students.  I love the flexibility of yoga and how, after a brief conversation, I can create a class that is tailored to the individual by challenging their weaknesses, playing to their strengths and providing tools that help bring the body, mind and breath into balance.
My first pregnancy in 2009 turned my focus away from the physical challenges of yoga toward an inward breath centered practice.  My experience of empowerment during pregnancy and the birth of my daughter inspired me to study and teach prenatal/postnatal yoga in order to help women stay balanced and connected to their inner strength.
In 2010, I returned home to St. John with my husband to raise my family and get back in the water.  I teach at Caneel Bay's M'Ocean Studio, and my mother and I share a yoga business, Crystal Blue Yoga, offering classes, workshops and retreats.  My most recent challenge is teaching Radiant Child Yoga with my children and in the schools.

Fitness Focus:  I am a part time yoga instructor and a full time mother of two very active yogis.  My focus for myself and my students is on attaining balance: balance between strength and flexibility, effort and ease, focus and playfulness. In yoga you stretch the muscles while building strength, so the primary effort involves balancing opposing forces.  In order to find freedom, you must define your boundaries.  In order to open to vulnerability, you must access your inner strength. These are physical qualities as well as mental ones.  Our bodies are, in many ways, a reflection of our minds.  Going upside down in a yoga pose, for example, requires not only strength in the shoulders, arms and core, but also trust in your body's ability to hold you up and catch you if you fall.  Mindful movement (asana), mindful breath (pranayama) and a mindful mind (meditation or mantra) are qualities that define a balanced yoga session.  When you are able to bring these qualities into your daily life is when you truly begin to find balance.

Interests and Goals:  Whether I am on my mat or off it, I am always trying to explore my world and learn something new.  I love to sail and spend time on the ocean, cook yummy, nutritious and creative meals for my family, and hike to the beach, enjoying the natural world with my children.  Professionally, I am studying anatomy and therapeutic applications of yoga to better address the individual needs of my students.  I believe that yoga is more than fitness; when practiced mindfully and with a great teacher, it can bring physical and emotional healing.

Lifestyle Philosophy:  Live.  Love.  Laugh.  Your perspective creates your thoughts and your thoughts create everything.  I am open to new ideas, new adventures and new people.  I continue to learn every day from my children, my husband and my students.  I will always be a student of yoga and life itself, excited to share my experiences with those I encounter on this extraordinary journey.

Nayad Review: One of my greatest challenges in my physical practice has been finding clothes, and specifically bras, that are comfortable, supportive and can rise to the challenge of going upside down.  As a small, slim woman with a large bosom there isn't a lot out there. Nayad tops provide the support I need for my practice, the coverage to wear while teaching and are comfortable enough to wear every day. Where have you been all my life?

Be a part of the Global Mala - Uniting Yoga, Seva and Collective Consciousness on St John, VI.

Unite with the global yoga community and experience the power of meditation in action.
Join us as we gather together to bring greater awareness and raise funds in support of Project Homeless Connect, HOPE, and Friends Helping Friends. Share in the community, share in the energy and help promote peace and conscious action worldwide.

We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to practice and play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

If 108 sun salutations sound too daunting, join us in chanting the mantra OM 108 times. Your mala is an expression of you and your personal meditation for peace. Choose asana, mantra, switch between the two, or take a breather during a round.  It’s your choice and your practice!

After the main event, dance to the beats of DJ Smooth Sailin’. Live drumming will be lead by Kenny. Join St. John’s beautiful hoop girls in dance and celebration. Plenty of hoops and drums will be available to share and try. So join in the fun!

Free childcare will be lead by Radiant Child instructor Beth Gowan and supported by other yoga instructors. Children can participate at the crafts tent by creating mala beads and prayer flags. In additions to crafts, face painting and kid’s yoga are planned.

Food, non-alcoholic drinks, and wares will be sold.  All proceeds from the admission of $20 will go to charity.

Afterpartys and other satellite events are shaping up all around the mala. Expect more announcements about live music and parties in celebration of Peace Day 2012!

The Peace Project on St John is being sponsored by Do Yoga St John and Crystal Blue Yoga. We would like to invite any yoga instructors on St John to join us in leading the Sun Salutations.  Thank you and see you there! Namaste

This is their story. Four years in-the-making and shot on location in the Amazon rainforest, the mountains of Mexico, North America, and at a private meeting with the Dalai Lama in India, For the Next 7 Generations follows what happens when these women unite. ONE WEEK FREE YOGA and TITANS OF YOGA movie world premiere to kick-off National Yoga Month September

When was the last time you felt drained by your stressful day, struggled with weight control or had trouble concentrating?  Bring a little downward dog into your life and you could see drastic improvement.  The ultimate goal of yoga is to develop mind and body free of chronic strain.  Whether you’re looking for a change in lifestyle or simply looking for better stress management, yoga can help. Yoga is one of the oldest known sciences in the world and is widely acknowledged as a highly effective complementary alternative medicine. So, as we all explore ways to take better care of ourselves and even reduce health care costs, it gives us a proven way to do so.
September is official National Yoga Month. Cards worth ONE WEEK FREE YOGA and FREE YOGA CLASSES are available to all who visitwww.yogamonth.org.  Get off the couch and onto the yoga mat in the name of better health.
For the first time ever, TITANS OF YOGA - an empowering and inspirational movie and the Official National Yoga Month movie - brings together twenty-five of the most prominent figures in the worlds of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, from Dr. Dean Ornish, a physician consultant to President Clinton, to Lilias Folan, the “First Lady of Yoga.” As they share their own life experiences from the tragic to the ecstatic, the Titans embark on a journey of self-discovery that touches and inspires.  Their tales of addiction and heartache, depression, an HIV positive diagnosis and a penchant for sex, drugs and rock-and-roll will move you as they share how they overcame these challenges and transformed them into their greatest life victories. Proceeds benefit Yoga-Recess in School to bring yoga-based health education into classrooms. To watch the trailerwww.yogamonth.org.

National Yoga Month is a grassroots campaign administered by the Yoga Health Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. All funds benefit the national awareness campaign and Yoga-Recessin School to bring yoga-based health and fitness education into classrooms.

Why are there 108 beads on a mala?

"On a mala, or set of mantra counting beads, there are generally 108 beads, or some fraction of that number. The question often arises: Why are there 108 beads on a mala?"
- Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati

Below is a collection that helps to explain the question, why 108?
None of these reasons are being promoted here as more of less true than the others. However, you may notice that 108 appears to somewhat like a road map of reality in general, and the human in particular.
Regardless of the meaning of 108, it is important that if a mala is used to count mantras, the mantra be remembered with sincerity, devotion, feeling and full attention.

9 times 12: Both of these numbers have been said to have spiritual significance in many traditions. 9 times 12 is 108. Also, 1 plus 8 equals 9. That 9 times 12 equals 108.
Powers of 1, 2, and 3 in math: 1 to 1st power=1; 2 to 2nd power=4 (2x2); 3 to 3rd power=27 (3x3x3). 1x4x27=108
Harshad number: 108 is a Harshad number, which is an integer divisible by the sum of its digits (Harshad is from Sanskrit, and means "great joy")
Desires: There are said to be 108 earthly desires in mortals.
Lies: There are said to be 108 lies that humans tell.
Delusions: There are said to be 108 human delusions or forms of ignorance.
Heart Chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-realization.
Sanskrit alphabet: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108.
Pranayama: If one is able to be so calm in meditation as to have only 108 breaths in a day, enlightenment will come.
Upanishads: Some say there are 108 Upanishads, texts of the wisdom of the ancient sages.
Sri Yantra: On the Sri Yantra there are marmas where three lines intersect, and there are 54 such intersections. Each intersections has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti qualities. 54 times 2 equals 108. Thus, there are 108 points that define the Sri Yantra as well as the human body.
Pentagon: The angle formed by two adjacent lines in a pentagon equals 108 degrees.
Marmas: Marmas or marmasthanas are like energy intersections called chakras, except have fewer energy lines converging to form them. There are said to be 108 marmas in the subtle body.
Time: Some say there are 108 feelings, with 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and 36 related to the future.
8 extra beads: In doing a practice of counting the number of repetitions of the mala, 100 are counted as completed. The remaining are said to cover errors or omissions. The 8 are also said to be an offering to God and Guru.
Chemistry: Interestingly, there are about 115 elements known on the periodic table of the elements. Most of those, around or higher than the number 100 only exist in the laboratory, and some for only thousandths of a second. The number that naturally exist on Earth is around 100.
Astrology: There are 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equals 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.
River Ganga: The sacred River Ganga spans a longitude of 12 degrees (79 to 91), and a latitude of 9 degrees (22 to 31). 12 times 9 equals 108.
Planets and Houses: In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108.
Goddess names: There are said to be 108 Indian goddess names.
Gopis of Krishna: In the Krishna tradition, there were said to be 108 gopis or maid servants of Krishna.
1, 0, and 8: Some say that 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.
Sun and Earth: The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun.
Moon and Earth: The average distance of the Moon from the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Moon.
Silver and the moon: In astrology, the metal silver is said to represent the moon. The atomic weight of silver is 108.
Numerical scale: The 1 of 108, and the 8 of 108, when added together equals 9, which is the number of the numerical scale, i.e. 1, 2, 3 ... 10, etc., where 0 is not a number.
Meditations: Some say there are 108 styles of meditation.
Breath: Tantra estimates the average number of breaths per day at 21,600, of which 10,800 are solar energy, and 10,800 are lunar energy. Multiplying 108 by 100 is 10,800. Multiplying 2 x 10,800 equals 21,600.
Paths to God: Some suggest that there are 108 paths to God.
Smaller divisions: The number 108 is divided, such as in half, third, quarter, or twelfth, so that some malas have 54, 36, 27, or 9 beads.
Hinduism: 108 is said to refer to the number of Hindu deities. Some say that each of the deities has 108 names.
Islam: The number 108 is used in Islam to refer to God.
Jain: In the Jain religion, 108 are the combined virtues of five categories of holy ones, including 12, 8, 36, 25, and 27 virtues respectively.
Sikh: The Sikh tradition has a mala of 108 knots tied in a string of wool, rather than beads.
Buddhism: Some Buddhists carve 108 small Buddhas on a walnut for good luck. Some ring a bell 108 times to celebrate a new year. There are said to be 108 virtues to cultivate and 108 defilements to avoid.
Chinese: The Chinese Buddhists and Taoists use a 108 bead mala, which is called su-chu, and has three dividing beads, so the mala is divided into three parts of 36 each. Chinese astrology says that there are 108 sacred stars.
Stages of the soul: Said that Atman, the human soul or center goes through 108 stages on the journey.
Meru: This is a larger bead, not part of the 108. It is not tied in the sequence of the other beads. It is the quiding bead, the one that marks the beginning and end of the mala.
Dance: There are 108 forms of dance in the Indian traditions.
Praiseworthy souls: There are 108 qualities of praiseworthy souls.
First man in space: The first manned space flight lasted 108 minutes, and was on April 12, 1961 by Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet cosmonaut.
